I haven't read or heard anyone from this perspective yet. Nobody on Fox...no one at Townhall. No one. And it is the first thing that crossed my mind when the talk about tax rebates started going around recently.
Not in the fancy, new 'Townhall' magazine. Not in the fiercely conservative and anti-Democrat 'National Review.' Not on our vaunted conservative talk radio. Not even King Limbaugh himself.
Geez. It's a softball...won't somebody please hit it out of the park?
There was next to no debate on the part of the Democrats with regards to $600 per individual and $1,200 per couple tax rebates in the last month. I mean, you would have thought that Democrats invented the tax cut they supported it so comletely. President Bush's tax rebate-heavy stimulus package passed the Nancy Pelosi Democrat-led U.S. House with nary a wimper, sustaining debate in the Harry Reid-led, Democrat-controlled Senate, but passing on the second vote after a whole slew of some $40 Billion in extra provisions was deleted. Something along the lines of, "Give old people and illegals more!" Thank God Republicans held to not providing that.
Now, I'm not the biggest fan of Washington spending sprees, what with a blog titled States' Rights. And I'm not the biggest proponent of the Feds getting involved in economics, which is what they are doing right now--or at least attempting to do! It didn't work for FDR with the Great Depression (thank you, Adolf!), it won't work now. The little $300 refund from several years ago, in fact, did very little. However, lower taxes that accompanied certainly did the trick over the last 5-plus years!
And that is point number one...if the economy does so much better through returning funds to the people, then why not just lower taxes again? Why, if lower taxes is such a good thing, which is what lower tax rates and rebates are about, not go ahead and lower the percentages again?
Obviously, Democrats would not like this, screaming their tired, old cliche'd "Tax Cuts For The Rich" charge. (Do they have that patented, yet?) And obviously it wouldn't do very well for them to support tax cuts right now when they want to "tax the hell out of" all the SUV-driving soccer moms and suburbanite "rich" people. Hard to pay for a Socialism with lower taxes, hmm?
Which leads into my most important point...how in the world did Democrats justify supporting a $600/$1,200 rebate when they so vociforously opposed $300 rebates in President Bush's first term? Hmm???
And even more suspect, how did the liberal media not jump on them like a freight train for doing so???
And even more directly, how did the conservatives in the media and radio not jump on them for doing so!? I mean, here's the greatest opportunity in the world to just absolutely slaughter Democrats in an election year, and it goes unannounced.
Do you remember the vim and vigor, p1$$ and vinegar that Democrats exhibited in denouncing Bush's "Tax Cuts For The Rich"? Yeah, I know, "Which ones," right? Democrats totally denounced the $300 tax rebate checks. Yet today, they hand over double that amount quite willingly? What gives?
And Democrats totally contradict themselves on their earlier complaints on the same matter...and conservatives just sit idly by...what?...twidling our thumbs??? Right.
You see, that's how you get 7 Justices of the Supreme Court on the Roe Court appointed by Republicans! Conservatives, time to grow a couple things, politically-speaking...brains and balls. Because the agenda of the left will only be defeated with a good, solid representation of both. And right now we don't seem to have much of either, and if you want further proof of that just take a look at the current Presidential election.
I am looking forward to receiving my tax rebate. I'll either spend it or invest it, which I highly recommend. Great way to turn $600 into $1,200 or more when the market goes back up. And then the government can tax me at a 15% long-term capital gains rate and make some of their money back!
But we really need to re-think the whole system of ways and means, meaning the way we spend and the means by which we have the necessary funds to do so. Per the concept of a blog titled States' Rights, and per a person of the mindset of a couple guys named Ron (Reagan and Paul), I can state that our government is too big, thus our taxes are too high, and the only way to lower the one is to eliminate parts of the other. And the only way to know what parts need be eliminated and which to keep is to refer to the Constitution, which tells us just that.
Like I said...softballs. I just keep waiting on Republicans to grow a pair and hit 'em out of the park.
And for the good folks in conservative media to make such observations...still waiting, guys (and ladies!).
